Summertime and the living is EASY, says Ella Fitzgerald and I tend to agree. I love summer! Not only are my kiddos home from school but the days are long and the weather is beautiful. It is a great time for fun family adventures. Today I want to share one of our 12-hour summer adventure sponsored by Caribou Coffee. (Make sure you check out the offer for a free Crafted Press beverage at the end of the post!)
This weekend our family decided to have a mini staycation (in the form of a 12 hour adventure) that included some of our favorite summer activities. We planned a day at the zoo followed by an IMAX movie and a trip to the pool.
First Stop, Caribou Coffee
I’m a born and bred Midwest girl. I lived in Minneapolis, the home of Caribou Coffee, for several years after college and quickly fell in love with their coffee beverages and chocolate covered espresso beans. Recently I was excited to learn that Caribou Coffee is now available in Omaha, my current hometown.
We stopped by Caribou Coffee to try their new Crafted Press. It’s delicious 12 hour cold-filtered coffee with just a hint of cream and real sugar. It has no artificial ingredients and a medium Crafted Press is only 100 calories! It’s the perfect combination to keep you awake and refreshed for all your summer adventures.
Caribou Coffee also has a wide variety of premium cold drinks for the whole family. My kiddos enjoy their Hot Chocolate Coolers (frozen hot chocolate) and Silly Sodas (raspberry or cherry-flavored sparkling water). Our four beverages cost just about $10 and were the perfect way to begin our 12 hour adventure.
Henry Doorly Zoo
Fully refreshed we packed up the kiddos and headed for one of the gems of Omaha, the Henry Doorly Zoo. We have an annual pass, but don’t even use it as much as we should. The zoo is 161-acres and includes a wildlife safari park with an open-air chairlift “skyfari”, the world’s largest indoor desert environment, and the largest indoor rainforest in the U.S.
My Original Crafted Press kept me cool and refreshed though all 161 acres of animals! We visited the primates…
I even had enough energy to attempt the gift shop full of tempting stuffed animals with my daughter!
We decided to end our day at the zoo with a cooling trip to the IMAX theater to see Rocky Mountain Express. It was a great movie about the building of the railroad through the Canadian Rockies. It parallels a trip my parents took on the Rocky Mountaineer for their wedding anniversary this summer. The scenery is so gorgeous, I’m adding the trip to my bucket list!
As luck would have it, outside refreshments are allowed at the IMAX so along came the Caribou Original Crafted Press!
For our midday meal we had a picnic. I love to picnic, it allows us to eat healthy and save money even when out! I packed my Greek Salad with Fresh Green Tomatoes and my Crafted Press.
The kids had a smorgasbord of healthy food from the fridge.
We headed to the swimming pool to top off our 12 hour adventure. Living in the Midwest means only a few precious months of pool time a year so we try to make the most of our annual membership.
I love going to the pool in the evening after many of the families have left and the dangerous 10 a.m – 2 p.m. rays of the sun have passed. The kiddos splashed and played while I caught up on my reading and tried to capture their belly flops off the diving board.
Dog Walk Date
Returning home my hubby and I enjoyed a little time together with an evening dog walk. It gets a daily chore out of the way and allows us to talk about our week uninterrupted.
I call that a successful day!

To me a fun family adventure doesn’t have to be an expensive vacation, it can simply mean exploring your city and enjoying time together.
What would you do on a 12 hour adventure in your city?
